Common Pochard

Fascinating facts about the Common Pochard

• Measuring just 42–49 cm long with a 72–82 cm wingspan, this diving duck packs a weight of 467–1,240 g in winter – about the mass of a small laptop. Its stocky, short-tailed shape lets it dive and sprint through water, showing how compact bodies boost underwater agility. Seeing such power in a bird the size of a backpack reminds us that size isn’t the only driver of aquatic speed.
• When it flaps straight ahead, it can hit 22–24 m/s (49–54 mph). This makes the species able to cover long migratory routes across the Palearctic. The ability to fly that fast despite its plump build highlights the aerodynamic tricks evolution can perfect.
• In winter flocks, these ducks often feed alongside Bewick’s and whooper swans, whose powerful foot-stomps stir up sediment. Studies show this partnership can double the pochard’s food-intake rate compared with feeding alone. The fact that a duck can boost its meals by “hitchhiking” on a swan’s splash underscores how cooperation can shape survival strategies.
• Nests are built either on the ground within 10 m of water or as floating platforms, and a female lays one egg each day until a clutch of 8–10 eggs is complete. The eggs, about 62 mm × 44 mm, hatch after roughly 25 days and the ducklings fledge at 50–55 days old, already able to feed themselves. Such rapid, self-sufficient development shows how these birds maximize the short breeding window in temperate wetlands.
• Up to 89 % of nests in some areas contain at least one parasitic egg laid by another female, and parasitic eggs can make up 37 % of all eggs laid in certain populations. Yet a mother will still incubate these strangers’ eggs unless more than six are present, when she is twice as likely to abandon the nest. This tolerance reveals a surprising reproductive strategy where the cost of caring for an extra egg is outweighed by the risk of losing the whole clutch.
