• A marabou stork's pouch hangs like a grotesque water balloon from its throat—but it's not for storing food. That pendulum sac, called a gular pouch, can stretch to 25 cm long and serves as a resonance chamber. During breeding season, males inflate it and slap it against their chest to produce machine-gun rattles that echo across the savanna, a sound so loud it carries for kilometres. It's one of nature's ugliest percussion instruments.
• With a 9.5-metre wingspan and a standing height of 1.5 metres, a marabou is roughly the size of a human—except built for slouching. They weigh around 5 kg, as light as a large house cat, because their skeleton is mostly air sacs connected to their lungs. A pterosaur in a modern suit: hollow engineering that lets a bird the weight of a briefcase cast a shadow the size of a car.
• Marabous are Africa's most efficient scavengers because they tolerate what kills other birds: they drink water contaminated with cholera, anthrax, and salmonella without flinching. Their stomach acid is so corrosive it dissolves bone; their immune system is a fortress of white blood cells. They can go weeks without food, then gorge a quarter of their body weight in a single meal—a 1.25 kg feast crammed into a throat built like a python's.
• These storks congregate in breeding colonies of up to 30,000 birds stacked into the same acacia trees, turning the canopy into a squirming city of naked heads and clattering bills. A single tree can hold 50 nests side by side. The sheer density of carrion-eaters in one place means nothing rots: in a functioning colony, a dead animal vanishes in hours. They're not scavengers—they're nature's cleanup crew at industrial scale.
• Marabou storks have colonised African cities and towns in the past 50 years, nesting on power lines, hospital roofs, and abandoned buildings where food waste sprawls in open dumps. In some cities they number in thousands, shifting from savanna specialists to urban opportunists in a single human lifespan. They've become what crows are to London: visible proof that apex scavengers follow food, and food follows us.
