• A moth arrived in Europe in 2008 hidden inside ornamental box plants from East Asia, and within 15 years had colonised almost every country from Spain to Scandinavia. The box tree moth's caterpillars can strip an entire mature box hedge bare — down to bare wood — in just 3 weeks, turning centuries-old garden mazes into skeletons. European box trees never evolved defences against this pest because they'd never met it before, making this one of the fastest biological invasions on record.
• The caterpillar of the box tree moth is a tiny green assassin with dark stripes and a taste for only one plant: the common box. It can eat through 50 times its own body weight in leaves before pupating, and a single female can lay up to 200 eggs in her lifetime. When box leaves vanish, so does the caterpillar — they starve rather than switch plants, which is why they're such efficient defoliators.
• Adult box tree moths hide during the day and fly only at night, which made them almost invisible to gardeners until populations exploded. They're attracted to light, which means porch lamps and garden lights can pull them into yards where box plants are growing. A single moth can cover 2 kilometres in search of host plants, spreading the infestation across entire towns in a single growing season.
• The moth's rapid European takeover reveals a hidden vulnerability in our landscapes: we've planted billions of box trees — in gardens, hedge mazes, and formal landscaping — but they're genetically identical clones descended from just a handful of parent plants. They have no genetic diversity to evolve resistance, which is why the invasion hit so hard and why controlling it requires traps, netting, and pesticides rather than the plant simply fighting back.
• Box tree moths don't have a natural predator in Europe yet, but scientists are hunting for them in Asia. One parasitic wasp species shows promise — it lays eggs inside moth pupae, and the wasp larvae consume the developing moth from the inside. If it works, it could be released across Europe, turning the invasion upside down and making this an experiment in whether we can undo a century of accidental species shuffling through the global plant trade.
