Antipodean Albatross

Fascinating facts about the Antipodean Albatross

• When scientists compared mitochondrial DNA in 2004, they found a genetic break that justified treating the Antipodean albatross as a separate species from the wandering albatross. The split, first hinted at in 1992, reshaped how we count and protect these birds. It reminds us that hidden DNA clues can rewrite whole branches of the tree of life.
• A 2007 survey counted just 4,635-5,757 breeding pairs on Antipodes Island and 5,800 pairs on the Auckland Islands, plus a handful elsewhere, putting the total population at about 25,300 individuals. Such precise numbers expose how fragile their numbers are and why every lost pair matters for the species' future.
• Unlike most albatrosses, the Antipodean feeds almost exclusively on cephalopods and rarely on fish, never on crustaceans, and has even been spotted at giant cuttlefish spawning grounds off New South Wales. This specialized diet ties its fate to the health of deep-sea squid populations, linking two very different marine worlds.
• Breeding success has slipped to just 25 % while adult survival hovers at 80 % for females and 88 % for males, and rising Tasman Sea temperatures may be worsening the trend. The stark drop in survival rates highlights how climate change can silently erode even the most resilient ocean wanderers.
