• A Sandwich tern can spot a fish the size of your thumb from 15 metres high while flying at full speed — then dive at 60 km/h and snatch it underwater without breaking stride. Their eyes contain a special oil droplet that filters glare off water, giving them a clarity of vision that makes human eyesight look foggy by comparison.
• Named by a 18th-century ornithologist after the English port where he first caught specimens, the Sandwich tern has spent two centuries living down one of wildlife's most accidental names. They've never been particularly associated with the town, and the name stuck anyway — a reminder that science sometimes gets things backwards.
