• When a predator closes in, the agile wallaby doesn't run in a straight line — it zigzags at 40 km/h, changing direction every 2 seconds with a sharp pivot that would snap a human's ankles. The secret is in their tail: a muscular third limb that acts like a tightrope walker's pole, providing balance and steering force while their hind legs do the explosive pushing. Most predators can't match these angles and give up within seconds.
• At 3 kg, an agile wallaby joey rides in its mother's pouch for 8 months but never stops growing. By the time it emerges, it's already the size of a rabbit — yet it will spend another 3 months returning to the pouch for milk and safety. No other Australian marsupial has such a long dependency period relative to its adult size, a strategy born from living in open grasslands where there's nowhere to hide.
• Female agile wallabies can pause their pregnancies. If drought dries the grass and food becomes scarce, a pregnant female can halt her embryo's development mid-womb, waiting weeks or months until rain returns and grass regrows. • Agile wallabies are the only wallaby species that regularly live in herds of 50+ animals, gathering at waterholes during the dry season between May and September. • Their molars never stop growing and are constantly replaced in a conveyor-belt system: new teeth move forward from the back of the jaw, pushing worn teeth out the front over 5 to 8 years.
