• Only 2,000 Zanzibar red colobuses remain on a single island — fewer than the number of giant pandas in the world, yet almost nobody has heard of them. In 1990, they numbered just 1,500. The species teeters on the edge because everything they need exists in a space smaller than 30 square kilometres. A single hurricane, disease outbreak, or forest fire could erase them entirely.
• Their stomachs are divided into four chambers like a cow's, but they're processing leaf matter so toxic it would poison most other primates. Colobuses have evolved specialized bacteria in their gut that break down unripe fruits and young leaves packed with defensive chemicals. This adaptation lets them feed on food sources competitors can't touch — and it's why they can survive in a crowded island with limited resources.
• Baby colobuses are born pure white while their mothers are rust-red and black, making infants look like a completely different species. This bizarre mouth design works perfectly for their leaf-eating life: it creates a tough grinding surface and prevents them from accidentally injuring themselves while processing rough vegetation. Most primates, including humans, would starve with this setup.
• They live in troops of 15 to 50 individuals that rarely interact with other groups, creating isolated populations on a tiny island. If one troop dies out, the survivors cannot easily find mates in another group — the island's forests are fragmented enough that distances feel unbridgeable to monkeys who've never travelled far.
