About the Yellowfin Tuna

The yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) cuts a striking figure in the world’s tropical and subtropical seas, its sleek body cloaked in a dark metallic blue that fades to a silvery belly marked by about 20 vertical lines. Its most distinctive feature is the brilliant yellow hue of the second dorsal, anal fins and the intervening finlets, a splash of color that gives the species its name. Growing to lengths of up to 2.4 m (7 ft 10 in) and weights exceeding 200 kg (440 lb), the fish combines power with agility, capable of swimming at 20.8 m/s (47 mph) thanks to a warm-blooded physiology, a unique cardiovascular system, and a lymph-driven hydraulic mechanism that smooths its fins for high-speed bursts. Yellowfins are true epipelagic wanderers, typically cruising the top 100 m of the ocean but diving deeper when night falls or when they need to escape predators, with recorded dives past 1,500 m. They gather in schools that often mingle with other tuna, dolphins, and even floating debris, and they hunt fast-moving baitfish, squid, and crustaceans, sometimes turning the tables on smaller tuna. A surprising trait revealed by acoustic tags is their tendency to follow moving vessels, a behavior that hints at an opportunistic intelligence rarely associated with fish. Their life in the open ocean is a constant balance of speed, depth, and the ever-present threat of industrial fisheries that harvest them by purse seines, longlines, and, to a lesser extent, pole-and-line gear.
