About the Cape White Seabream

The Cape white seabream, Diplodus capensis, glides through the shallow waters of Southern Africa with a deep, oval silhouette and a thin, slightly protrusible mouth framed by eight incisor-like teeth up front. Its adult form shimmers in uniform silvery-grey, punctuated by a striking saddle-shaped black blotch on the caudal peduncle, while juveniles display faint vertical bars that fade as they grow toward the species’ typical length of about 30 cm, though individuals can reach 45 cm. Beneath the dorsal fin’s 12 spines and 14–15 soft rays and the anal fin’s three spines and 13–14 soft rays, rows of molar-like teeth grind seaweed, sponges, bivalves, crustaceans, polychaetes and other molluscs, making this fish a true omnivore of the coastal reef and estuarine mosaic. In the surf-kissed bays and tidal pools from southern Angola to eastern South Africa, these seabream gather in small schools of eight to fifteen, then burst into a swirling ball near the surface to release eggs and milt in a synchronized group spawning. Remarkably, the species is a digynous hermaphrodite, with some males exhibiting partial protandry, an unusual reproductive twist that ensures a flexible sex ratio in the ever-changing coastal environment. Their spawning peaks from September to December on inshore reefs under 30 m, a rhythm that ties their life cycle tightly to the seasonal pulse of the Indian and Atlantic coasts they call home.
