• A winter wren weighs as much as three pennies stacked together, yet its song carries over 1.5 kilometres through dense forest—louder per gram of body mass than any other North American bird. That volume comes from a syrinx with four independent pairs of muscles, letting it sing two notes at once. A 10-second burst uses more energy than a hummingbird needs to hover for an hour.
• Winter wrens nest in cavities so tight that a human finger couldn't fit inside, often tucked into rotting logs, tree bark crevices, or the gap between a shed wall and the ground. The male builds up to 12 dummy nests before the female picks one—a costly gamble on her approval that happens nowhere else in the wren family.
• In harsh winters, winter wrens enter controlled hypothermia at night, dropping their body temperature by 24 degrees Celsius to conserve energy while huddled in crevices. They wake at dawn and shiver violently for 15 minutes to warm back up. A single cold snap can kill entire populations in the northern reaches of their range, which is why they cluster only in the deepest coniferous forests where snow provides insulation.
