• Icefish have no hemoglobin — the protein that makes blood red and carries oxygen in almost every other vertebrate on Earth. Instead, their blood is transparent and watery, which lets them absorb oxygen directly through their skin and gills. This works only in Antarctic waters so cold and oxygen-rich that a transparent fish can survive on diffusion alone. Anywhere warmer, they'd suffocate.
• A single icefish heart pumps blood at half the pressure of a human heart, yet these fish thrive in one of the planet's harshest environments. Their blood is 10 times thinner than ours, so their heart doesn't have to work as hard. This extreme economy of effort reveals how life reshapes its blueprints when the rules change — cold water is a redesign, not just a challenge.
• Icefish evolved from ancestors with red blood roughly 20 million years ago, losing their hemoglobin gene entirely — a biological gamble that paid off.
