Fascinating facts about the Bactrian Camel

• A Bactrian camel can drink 200 litres of water in under 15 minutes — then survive for weeks without another drop. Their blood cells shrivel and plump with water loss without dying, a trick no other mammal pulls off. They're not storing water in their humps (those are fat reserves). They're storing it everywhere: bone marrow, organs, even eye fluid. In a landscape where water might appear once a month, this superpower is the difference between life and starvation.
• Those two humps contain 50 kilograms of fat each — fuel for crossing 150 kilometres of desert on nothing but dried grass and thorns. When a camel hasn't eaten for weeks, the humps shrivel to half their size. Nomads once tracked camel welfare by humps alone: a proud hump meant the herd was fed. A collapsed hump meant trouble was coming.
• A Bactrian camel's foot is a living compass. Their broad, two-toed foot spreads like a snowshoe, distributing weight across sand so evenly they barely sink. The foot also grips hard ground with a tough underpad and splays wide on soft terrain — all without conscious thought. Desert builders once understood this so well they modelled early shoe soles on camel feet.
• In Mongolia, fewer than 1,000 wild Bactrians remain, making them more endangered than giant pandas. They're vanishing not from hunting but from competition: domestic camels now number around 1 million across Central Asia, watering holes that wild herds depend on, eating grazing land down to dirt. A wild Bactrian shares zero evolutionary distance with its domestic cousins — they could interbreed — yet they're being squeezed out of existence by them.
• A camel's digestive system can extract nutrients from plants so toxic they'd kill a horse within hours. Their tough mouth can chew through thorns that would shred human skin. Their three-chambered stomach ferments shrubs most herbivores ignore. In the Gobi Desert, 80% of vegetation is inedible to other animals — but becomes fuel for a camel. This is why they were the only animal viable for crossing Central Asia for 2,000 years of trade.
