• Winter fireflies measure just 9 to 18 mm (0.4-0.7 in) from head to wing tip, making them about the length of a small paperclip, yet they never glow. Unlike their lantern-bearing cousins, adult E. corrusca lack light organs entirely, a rare trait among fireflies that forces them to rely on daytime activity and chemical cues instead of bioluminescent signals.
• When winter bites, most adult winter fireflies survive. A three-year study (1997-1999) recorded monthly survival rates between 88 % and 99 %, showing that overwintering adults lose only a handful of individuals each month. Such low mortality lets stable populations persist year after year, ensuring that the beetles can re-emerge each spring to mate and feed.

• The winter firefly's gut is a microbial desert, often dominated by a single bacterial species, a stark contrast to the diverse gut communities of many insects.
