• The rough prominent is found across the entire continent, ranging from the northern boreal forests all the way down to the subtropical reaches of Florida. It thrives especially in deciduous forests where trees provide abundant food for its larvae. Within those woods it prefers sites at some elevation, where the cooler microclimate suits its development. This broad distribution makes it one of the more common moths in North America.
• Adult rough prominents take to the air soon after dusk, beginning their nightly activity as darkness falls. They remain active through the night, drawn to artificial lights, and seek shelter again well before sunrise.
