Fascinating facts about the Stone Marten

• In 2016 two beech martens caused an unexpected shutdown of the world's most powerful particle accelerator by climbing onto high-voltage transformers that power the experiments. The animals reached transformers rated between 18 and 66 kV, which forced operators to halt the Large Hadron Collider while the intruders were removed.
• A beech marten living in northeastern Spain occupied a home range of 52.5 ha (130 acres) that contained two distinct centres of activity, showing how the species can maintain a relatively large territory in unmodified habitats. Its peak movements occurred between six and midnight, when the animal was most active, while it remained largely inactive during the daylight hours of nine am to six pm.
• The beech marten's feet exert a load of 30.9 g per square centimetre, which is exactly twice the pressure recorded for the pine marten's feet at 15.2 g. This higher foot pressure means the animal must avoid deep snow, as the increased load makes movement on snowy ground especially difficult.
• A beech marten has been recorded killing a domestic cat, although another incident describes a cat fighting back for more than half an hour before prevailing. This rare predatory behaviour is echoed by other occasional attacks on larger carnivores, such as the documented killing of European polecats.
• The species established a feral population in North America after animals escaped a private fur farm in Burlington during the 1940s, and later releases or escapes were recorded in 1972. Today it is found in Wisconsin, especially around the urban centres surrounding Milwaukee, and in several wooded upland areas of the Kettle Moraine State Forest and nearby counties such as Walworth, Racine, Waukesha and probably Jefferson.
