• A wild water buffalo's horns can span 1 metre from tip to tip and weigh as much as a human head — yet they use them not for dominance fights but as cooling fins, channelling blood through a network of vessels to shed heat in the swampy tropics. Their horns are also slightly flattened and splayed outward, which helps them avoid sinking into mud while plodding through wetlands where solid ground barely exists.
