• A wild boar's snout contains up to 1,400 nerve endings — more sensory receptors than in a human hand. This nose is a precision drilling tool: the disc of cartilage at its tip can rotate independently, letting them excavate without moving their whole head. • Wild boars have transformed into two distinct 'ecotypes' within Europe depending on winter severity: southern boars stay smaller and sleek, while northern populations develop thick layers of subcutaneous fat and dense guard hairs before autumn. A Polish boar weighs 30% more than a Spanish one, and this isn't genetic drift — it's phenotypic plasticity driven by climate, with piglets born in harsh winters growing heavier regardless of ancestry.
