Wild boars can plunge their massive heads into frozen soil like tiny bulldozers, digging 8-10 cm (3-4 in) into hard ground and even flipping rocks that weigh 40-50 kg (88-110 lb). Their sprint reaching up to 40 km/h (25 mph), and they can vault obstacles 140-150 cm (55-59 in) high, letting them escape predators and cross rugged terrain with startling agility.
During the brief rut, a dominant male may mate with 5-10 sows, losing up to 20 % of his body weight by season's end. First-time mothers carry their young for 114-130 days, while older sows extend gestation to 133-140 days, producing an average litter of 4-6 piglets, with up to 10-12 in exceptional cases.
Wild boars thrive at astonishing heights, ranging up to 1,900 m (6,200 ft) in the Carpathians, 2,600 m (8,500 ft) in the Caucasus, and even 3,600-4,000 m (11,800-13,100 ft) in Central Asian and Kazakhstani mountains. Their ability to occupy such diverse altitudes shows their adaptability to cold, sparse vegetation, and rugged terrain.
In the wild, boars rarely live past a decade, with the maximum known lifespan of 9-10 years, yet under human care they can reach extraordinary ages, one subspecies, Sus scrofa riukiuanus, lived 27 years in captivity. This contrast underscores how predation, disease, and hunting truncate wild lifespans, while protected environments reveal their true longevity potential.
In the wilds of Primorsky Krai and Manchuria, some boars weigh 300-350 kg (660-770 lb) and stand 125 cm (49 in) at the shoulder. Such giants are practically untouchable for wolves, as adults of this size are generally immune from wolf predation.
