• At 3.3 grams, the Eurasian pygmy shrew is one of the smallest mammals on Earth — lighter than a penny, yet it must eat nearly its entire body weight in food every single day. Its heart races at 1,200 beats per minute, a metabolism so ferocious that starvation takes less than 6 hours. This is the price of being so small: every moment without food is a countdown to death.
• The shrew's teeth never stop growing, like a perpetual saw blade that wears down from constant gnawing on insect exoskeletons. It hunts by touch and sound in leaf litter, producing ultrasonic squeaks that bounce off prey — a sonar system fine-tuned for the dark forest floor where eyes are nearly useless. Each squeak costs energy, but the prey it finds costs less.
• A shrew's nose is a hypersensitive chemical detector, packed with scent organs that let it smell a grub buried 10 centimetres underground.
