Fascinating facts about the Eurasian Forest Dormouse
- Forest dormice can leap up to two metres between branches, letting them dart through the canopy while hunting insects or escaping predators. This agility is paired with their habit of building solid natal nests 1-7 m above ground, spherical and 150-250 mm across, with a single entrance facing the trunk. Such high, sturdy homes protect newborns from storms and predators, boosting juvenile survival in the dense forests they call home.
- In the northern part of its range, the forest dormouse hibernates from October through April, dropping its body temperature from a normal 35-37 °C to about 5 °C. While hibernating it curls into a ball, wraps its tail around its body and presses its hands to its cheeks.
- Females give birth to litters of two to five pups, each weighing about two grams at birth, and occasionally up to seven. The newborns open their eyes at two weeks and start nibbling solid food a week later, staying in the nest for about three more weeks before venturing out. This rapid early development, combined with a gestation of four weeks, means a single breeding season can produce up to two litters in the south, directly tying reproductive output to the length of the warm season.
- Forest dormice occupy a massive elevational range, being recorded up to 3 500 m above sea level, across habitats from mixed woodlands to rocky montane shrublands. Their nests are built in dense foliage or low branches, 1-7 m off the ground, where they can hide from predators like tawny owls and Eurasian eagle-owls.
- Territorial adult forest dormice maintain home ranges 65-100 m in diameter, yet population density remains low, often just two to three individuals per acre.
