About the Whitespotted Rainbowfish

Notolabrus gymnogenis, a striking member of the Labridae family that inhabits the cooler coastal reefs of eastern Australia, from Hervey Bay, Queensland to Lakes Entrance, Victoria, including Tasmania and Lord Howe Island. Growing to about 40 cm, juveniles display a green-brown hue dotted with rows of white spots, while females turn reddish-brown with the same spotted pattern. Males become the showpiece of the species, flaunting vivid red dorsal and anal fins, a bold red band around the rear, a white caudal peduncle and a contrasting yellow tail, with the largest recorded male measuring 23 cm in standard length. These fish navigate the water using flexible ray fins that attach to muscles and ligaments, granting them precise locomotion as they hunt across depths of 4–53 m, favoring deeper reef zones especially as surface waters warm. A protogynous hermaphrodite, the species begins life as female and transitions to male between 13 and 20 cm, a shift tied to intricate brain changes driven by maturation and environmental cues. Males defend territories that host harems of roughly ten females and juveniles, forming pairs to spawn. Their diet is a mosaic of crustaceans, amphipods, decapods, and gastropods, captured via suction and crushing teeth. Larger individuals will pair up with an octopus to catch prey flushed from hidden crevices, never harming the octopus but driving away competing fish, illustrating an opportunistic foraging association.
