Slender Seahorse

Fascinating facts about the Slender Seahorse

• A pregnancy that lasts only about two weeks yields tiny babies that grow to a maximum of 6.8 inches (17.5 cm) as adults, while newborns measure just 8.2 mm in height.
• Males flash orange and females yellow, yet both can sprout brown or white spots that shift to pink or white during courtship, turning each encounter into a living color show.
• These seahorses can be found as deep as 55 m (180 ft), but the smallest individuals stay in the shallowest waters, hugging coral, seagrass, mangroves and floating Sargassum mats.
• Their range stretches from 29° N to 25° S and from 133° W to 40° E, covering the Bahamas to Brazil and even reaching the U.S. coasts of Florida and North Carolina.
• In Brazil alone, commercial collectors pull out roughly 25 million slender seahorses each year, a pressure that pushes the species toward endangered status despite its current abundance.
