• At just 20 cm long, the zigzag wrasse fits in the palm of your hand, yet its skin reads like a living paint swatch. A juvenile or female shows a pearly white base streaked by a bold black or yellow zigzag along the side, while adult males dress the upper side in greenish-pink tones topped with a bright yellow dorsal stripe layered with blue, yellow, green and pink lines.
• The zigzag wrasse roams a massive stretch of ocean, from Africa's eastern shores and the Red Sea all the way to the Philippines, New Caledonia and even southern Japan. It prefers the patchwork of sand, rubble and coral that tops reefs, staying in waters no deeper than 20 m where sunlight still reaches. Such a broad range means the fish experiences many local conditions.
• Unlike many fish that stay the same sex, every zigzag wrasse starts life as a female and can later become male, a strategy called protogynous hermaphroditism. Most of the time they patrol alone, sometimes forming small groups, and can even act aggressively toward other wrasses of the same species. Though collected for aquariums, the IUCN rates them Least Concern, suggesting current trade levels aren't pushing the species toward danger.
• The zigzag wrasse roams the tropical Indo-West Pacific, from Africa's eastern coast and the Red Sea all the way to the Philippines, New Caledonia and southern Japan. It prefers mixed reef zones of sand, rubble and coral, hanging out in shallow water but never deeper than 20 m.
