• A fish with a head shaped like a Roman hammer uses it to wedge into coral crevices and extract hidden crustaceans — the angular profile isn't decoration, it's a tool. The axehead wrasse can compress its body sideways and slide into gaps barely wider than a pencil, hunting in the tightest reef cracks where other predators can't reach. This geometry lets it access prey no competitor can.
• Male axehead wrasse undergo one of the ocean's quickest transformations: they change colour and behaviour in seconds if a larger male appears, shifting from breeding plumage back to juvenile drab in a flash-change that tricks rivals about their rank. The switch is neurological, not gradual — a social gambit that costs them nothing if the bluff works.
• Wrasses practice serial monogamy on coral reefs, with males holding and defending small territories of just 5–10 square metres where they court females daily.
