Fascinating facts about the Whiskered Tern

• A whiskered tern can pluck a mosquito larva from the water surface without getting wet — it dips its lower mandible into the water while flying at 20 km/h, grabs prey with millimetre precision, and pulls up without even touching down. This hunting style, called 'dip feeding', lets them hunt 200+ times per day across African and Asian wetlands without ever landing.
• During breeding season, the male whiskered tern performs a dramatic aerial dance for 30 seconds straight, climbing vertically while trembling his wings and calling — a display so exhausting he repeats it dozens of times to convince a female he's fit enough to be a parent. The display works: females choose males based on how many times they can pull it off.
• Unlike most terns that nest on ocean coasts, whiskered terns build floating platforms of aquatic plants in freshwater marshes, and both parents take turns incubating eggs while hovering an arm's length above predators. If a water snake or monitor lizard approaches, they dive-bomb it at speeds over 60 km/h, targeting the eyes — a suicidal strategy that works because most predators give up rather than risk blindness.
• Whiskered terns have split their breeding range across three continents — Africa, Asia, and North America — yet birds from different continents never interbreed because they time their breeding seasons to match local weather patterns. A North American population breeds when African populations are moulting 5,000 km away, creating biological isolation without physical barriers.
• The whiskered tern's summer plumage is jet-black on the cap and nape, but in winter it molts into pale grey and white — a transformation so complete that 19th-century ornithologists thought they were two separate species and gave them different scientific names. This was only proven wrong when someone tracked the same bird across seasons.
