• The cloudless sulphur begins its life as a tiny pitcher-shaped egg that is initially pure white. Within a short time the shell fades to a pale orange, signalling the rapid development that follows. This egg stage endures for exactly six days before the larva emerges. When it hatches the caterpillar is yellow-to-greenish, striped along the sides and marked with rows of black dots on its back.
• A fully grown cloudless sulphur caterpillar reaches a length of 41 to 45 mm. It feeds on a variety of leguminous host plants, including sensitive peas, several species of senna, clovers, and other Fabaceae members.
• Adult cloudless sulphurs display a wingspan ranging from 4.8 to 6.5 cm, giving them a medium-sized, elongated appearance. Their wings are fairly elongated but not angled, a shape that distinguishes them from many smaller sulphur species. Emerging from the chrysalis, the butterfly measures 55-70 mm in body length, and its clear yellow upper surfaces contrast with the varied patterns below.
• Female cloudless sulphurs are recognisable by a black open square or star on the underside of the forewing, set against lemon-yellow to golden or white wings that may carry variable black margins. Males differ, being clear yellow on the upper side and yellow or reddish-brown mottled below. Both sexes share a medium wingspan of 4.8 to 6.5 cm, giving the butterfly an elongated look without angled wings.
• The cloudless sulphur is most abundant from Argentina through southern Texas, Georgia, and Florida. Its overall range stretches from South America up to southern Canada, reaching as far north as southwestern Ontario, with only occasional visitors farther north.
