• The Mexican duck exists in a state of evolutionary limbo — it's so genetically similar to the mallard that scientists still debate whether it's a separate species or a regional variant that never finished diverging. DNA studies show they share recent ancestry, yet in the lakes and marshes of central Mexico, the two never interbreed. It's a living case study in how species boundaries blur in nature.
• Mexico's wetlands have shrunk by 35% since 1970, and the Mexican duck has nowhere else to go — unlike mallards, which breed across the northern hemisphere, this duck is locked to a handful of freshwater lakes in the Mexican plateau. Fewer than 3,000 breeding pairs remain. Their entire future depends on protecting wetlands smaller than a large city.
• Male Mexican ducks perform an elaborate courtship sequence that lasts 8–10 seconds and involves synchronized head flicks, chin-raising, and a specific whistle that sounds nothing like a mallard's call. During breeding season, a male will repeat this display dozens of times a day to win a mate, but only females who recognize the exact pattern will respond — one wrong note and he's ignored.
• Unlike mallards, which migrate thousands of kilometres between continents, Mexican ducks barely move. They're year-round residents of the same lakes where they were born, which means they've adapted to breed in late winter (December–February) when northern ducks are still frozen in. This timing kept them reproductively isolated for thousands of years.
• A Mexican duck's diet shifts dramatically between wet and dry seasons — in summer they dabble in shallow water eating aquatic plants and insects, but during Mexico's long dry season (May–October) they shift inland to feed on seeds and terrestrial vegetation, sometimes flying 50 km to reach food sources. This flexibility kept them alive during droughts, but only if wetlands remain connected.
