• A Western quoll can leap 2 metres horizontally and scale a tree trunk in seconds — an explosive hunter that hunts nocturnally across the arid woodlands of southwest Australia, using its long tail as a living rudder to pivot mid-air and snatch insects and small mammals from branches. This acrobatic precision comes from a body built for precision rather than bulk: they weigh less than 3kg, giving them agility that larger predators can never match.
• Unlike most marsupials, Western quolls are solitary and fiercely territorial, with males and females meeting only to breed — and even then, the male plays zero role in raising young. A mother raises her litter alone in a den, making this one of Australia's most independent marsupials and one of the few where fatherhood is entirely absent.
• Their teeth are a surgeon's instruments: sharp premolars designed to crack open beetle carapaces and crush the skulls of mice, yet they'll also eat native berries and invertebrates, making them flexible hunters in an environment where reliable food is scattered across vast distances. This dietary versatility is why they've survived in arid woodland where specialist feeders have vanished.

A reintroduction program beginning in 2015 has been returning them to former territory using conservation breeding, an effort to restore a predator that shaped the ecology of Australia for thousands of years before introduced foxes and feral cats rewrote the rules.
• They mark their territory with a scent gland beneath their tail, leaving a chemical signature on branches and rocks that other quolls can read like a map — a form of woodland gossip that tells neighbours 'this patch is taken' without a single vocalization.
