• Clocked at 88 km/h (55 mph), the springbok is one of Africa's fastest antelopes. This speed is underpinned by convergent mitochondrial gene mutations shared with the pronghorn and a 58 % concentration of glycolytic fast-twitch fibres, plus lactate-dehydrogenase activity four times higher than in humans. These physiological tweaks let the springbok sprint away from cheetahs and other predators, turning its lean body into a living bullet across the savanna.
• Springbok can survive the arid Kalahari without ever drinking water, extracting all needed moisture from succulent shrubs, leaves and flowers. In extreme cases individuals go their whole lives without a sip, relying on the double water content of desert flowers compared with grasses.
