• Bilbies galloping on slender hind limbs instead of hopping. Their forelimbs are built for digging, with three clawed digits and two claw-less ones, letting them carve spiralling tunnels up to 2 m deep and 3 m long. A single bilby may maintain several burrows, up to about a dozen, within its home range, moving between them for shelter from predators and the scorching daytime heat. This burrowing lifestyle not only protects them from foxes and cats but also creates underground refuges that buffer extreme temperatures, boosting their survival in arid habitats.
• A male bilby can weigh up to 3.7 kg in captivity, roughly twice the weight of a female that averages 0.8-1.1 kg, making the male's body mass twice that of females (800 to 2500 g for males relative to 600 to 1100 g for females). This sexual dimorphism extends to larger foreheads and longer canines in males. The size difference fuels distinct movement patterns: females travel an average of 1.5 km between burrows while males can cover up to 5 km, likely because males roam farther to find mates.
• Bilbies never drink water; they obtain all moisture from their diet of insects, seeds, bulbs, fruit, fungi and small animals. Their long, sticky tongues scoop up termites and other prey, while their enormous ears not only amplify sound for locating underground insects but also help regulate body temperature. By extracting water from food, bilbies can thrive in deserts where free water is scarce, illustrating a physiological adaptation that lets them occupy some of the harshest Australian landscapes.
• The bilby's gestation lasts only 12-14 days, one of the shortest among mammals, and the newborn is a tiny 0.25 in (0.6 cm) joey that must crawl into the mother's pouch and latch onto one of eight teats. After about 75 days in the pouch, the young leave and spend another two to three weeks cached in a burrow before becoming independent. This rapid reproductive cycle, with up to four litters per year in favourable conditions.
• Since European settlement, bilby range has collapsed from covering 70 % of mainland Australia to just 20-30 % of its original territory. Today they survive only in isolated desert pockets such as the Great Sandy, Tanami and Gibson deserts, with reintroduction projects using predator-proof fences to restore populations on islands and sanctuaries. This dramatic contraction underscores how invasive predators and habitat loss have reshaped their distribution, making fenced reserves essential for their survival.
