• Those pincers at the rear aren't weapons — they're a male's marriage proposal. When a male western earwig courts a female, he uses his cerci (the curved pincers) to gently grasp her abdomen in a specific grip that signals he's a suitable mate. Females actually prefer males with larger, more symmetrical pincers, which signal better genes. Evolution has turned what looks like a weapon into a delicate instrument of seduction.
• A female western earwig is one of the few insects that acts like a mammal: she sits on her eggs for weeks without eating, protecting them from predators and mold. She even licks them clean to prevent fungal infections — behaviour once thought impossible in insects. When the nymphs hatch, she guards them for days before they disperse. This level of parental care is so rare in the insect world that scientists initially dismissed reports of it as false.
• Western earwigs are born as miniature copies of adults, not worm-like larvae, and shed their exoskeleton up to seven times over 2–3 months to reach full size. Each molt is a vulnerability window: the new skeleton is soft and pale, and predators can kill them in seconds. This is why they hide in cracks during the day — they're not antisocial, they're in constant danger until their armor hardens.
• Despite their reputation as household pests, western earwigs are scavengers that eat dead insects and decaying plant matter — the cleanup crew of moist gardens. They produce a foul-smelling chemical spray from glands near their abdomen when threatened, which researchers have identified as a defensive cocktail that repels ants and spiders. They're far more likely to flee than fight, using those pincers only as a last resort.
• Western earwigs navigate using a behavior called tropotaxis: they sense humidity gradients in the air by comparing moisture levels detected by sensors on their antennae, then move toward the dampest spot. In dry conditions, they'll spend 95% of their time motionless, conserving water. This makes them so dependent on moisture that their presence in a habitat is a reliable indicator of consistently damp soil — making them unwitting markers of healthy, moist microclimates.
