• When a Virginia opossum 'plays possum,' it's not acting—it enters a involuntary catatonic state lasting anywhere from a few minutes to several hours. Their heart rate drops, body temperature plummets, and they release a smell like rotting meat from their anal glands. It's a genuine shock response, not a conscious choice, which is why predators can't tell the difference between a dead opossum and a real one.
• A female Virginia opossum raises her young in a pouch, but here's the twist: she can give birth to 20 babies and only has 13 teats. The losers literally don't survive. Those who do cling to her fur for weeks after leaving the pouch, hitching rides on her back as she forages—a behavior that earned them the Powhatan name 'aposoum,' meaning 'white animal.'
