• A bat the size of your thumb hunts at 2,000 metres above ground — higher than most small planes fly — where the air is so thin that even insects struggle to breathe. The lesser noctule climbs vertical shafts of warm air called thermals, spiralling upward to raid clouds of gnats and midges that no other predator can reach. This hunt happens in complete darkness, using echolocation clicks so rapid they fire 200 times per second.
• In autumn, lesser noctules stage a migration that baffles scientists: they fly up to 2,000 kilometres from summer forests in Eastern Europe to winter grounds in the west, crossing mountains and cities in a single season. Bats ringed in Russia have been found dead in Spain and France, proof of journeys as long as some bird migrations — but almost nobody notices because a bat weighs only 8–15 grams.
• The lesser noctule's echolocation is so tuned to hunting moths that it can detect wing vibrations smaller than the width of a human hair. When a moth hears the bat's sonar clicks coming, it spirals downward in a corkscrew dive to escape — a split-second predator-prey arms race playing out in darkness above the treetops, thousands of times every summer night.
• Pregnant lesser noctule females huddle in tree hollows and under eaves in groups of 10 to 100, generating shared body heat to survive cool spring nights. A single female may have twins — unusual for bats — and wean them in just four weeks, faster than almost any other European bat. This speed matters: males born late in summer won't survive their first winter migration.
• The lesser noctule's range is expanding northward into Britain and Scandinavia as European summers warm, with the first confirmed British breeding colony discovered in 2021. Climate change is shifting its migration routes and breeding zones, turning a bat that was rare north of the Alps into an increasingly common sight — a living map of how fast wildlife can rewire itself when temperature changes.
