• A muntjac's bark sounds like a dog's — sharp, repetitive, and so distinctive that forest rangers across Southeast Asia use it to track the animal's location. No other small deer on Earth makes such a loud, aggressive sound, turning the forest floor into a landscape of territorial announcements.
• Male Reeves's muntjacs grow razor-sharp tusks from their upper jaw that protrude like canines — a weapon found in almost no other living deer. Unlike the 12-point racks of bigger deer, muntjacs use these tusks in vicious close-quarter fights with rivals, slashing upward at each other's faces and necks. A single tusk can grow to 2 centimetres, long enough to pierce skin, making them one of Asia's smallest but most armed ungulates.
