Fascinating facts about the Vicuña

• At 3,600 metres above sea level, vicuñas live where the air holds half the oxygen of sea level — yet their blood contains 50% more red blood cells than humans, letting them sprint across thin mountain air at 60 km/h without gasping. Each red blood cell is also smaller and more densely packed, a adaptation honed over 5 million years in the Andes. Most mammals would collapse at that altitude; vicuñas hunt, mate, and fight in it.
• A vicuña's fibre is finer than cashmere, thinner than human hair, and so prized that 3 kg of fleece can sell for $3,000 on the global market. The Incas wore vicuña cloth — today only presidents and popes traditionally receive vicuña robes. Indigenous Andean herders still round them up every two years using a gentle system called *chaccu*, shearing them and releasing them unharmed, a practice older than 500 years.
• Vicuñas are the only grazing hoofed mammal that can digest lichen and low-nutrition alpine grasses by fermenting them in a three-chambered stomach — a system so efficient they extract nutrients from plants that would starve a llama. Their dung is also perfectly dry when expelled, so little water is wasted in one of Earth's driest regions.
• After nearly vanishing (fewer than 6,000 left by 1960, hunted for hide and meat), vicuñas rebounded to over 400,000 today thanks to protection and indigenous management. Peru's decision to lift hunting bans and allow regulated harvests in the 1990s proved that letting local communities profit from live animals, not dead ones, actually saves the species — a model now studied by conservation biologists worldwide.
• Vicuña males control territories with scent glands that secrete a black, tarry substance — they mark rocks, grass, even rival males with it, creating chemical boundaries across the high plains. Each territory is patrolled by the same small herd for years, their routes so consistent they wear visible paths into the mountainside, maps of dominance written across stone.
