• Before spraying, a desert spotted skunk does a handstand. It raises its hind legs straight up, sometimes walking on its front paws for a few steps, aiming its rear end like a loaded weapon. The spray itself — a mixture of sulphur compounds — can hit a target 3 metres away with accuracy. Most predators learn this warning dance means leave now; a single spray blinds and burns for hours.
• A desert spotted skunk weighs 340 grams — roughly the size of a baseball — yet hunts prey the same way a badger ten times its weight does. It digs rapid-fire burrows in hard-packed soil, following beetle larvae and scorpions underground with relentless speed. In a single night it can excavate dozens of holes, turning the desert floor into a grid of small craters that map its hunting route.
• Unlike striped skunks that hunt at dusk, desert spotted skunks are often active in the deep desert night when temperatures drop below freezing. They enter torpor — a hibernation-like state — on brutally cold days, slowing their heart rate and metabolism to survive on stored fat.
