Fascinating facts about the Vampire Squid

• Instead of hunting, the vampire squid descends nightly into a graveyard of dead plankton, fish, and whale carcasses raining from above — a strategy so energy-efficient that its metabolic rate is the lowest of any squid on Earth. Most deep-sea predators burn calories chasing prey; the vampire squid waits, barely breathing, in the oxygen-starved twilight 600 metres down where almost nothing else can survive. This makes it one of the few animals that thrives by eating leftovers.
• When cornered, a vampire squid pulls its arms inward and a membrane between them — called a web — folds up like a clown suit, making it look twice its actual size of 30 centimetres. If that fails, it ejected glowing mucus, not ink, which sticks to predators' eyes rather than clouding the water. It then inverts itself into a living hood and drifts away upside down, invisible in the darkness.
• Its eyes point perpendicular to its body — upward and sideways — giving it a 360-degree view of shadows passing overhead that might be food dropping from the surface. Most bioluminescent creatures use light to hunt; the vampire squid uses it as an early-warning system, flashing its own lights only when absolutely necessary to burn the least energy possible.
• The vampire squid has no ink sac because it evolved in water so oxygen-poor that creating a cloudy escape trick would suffocate it faster than any predator. Instead, it evolved bioluminescent organs on its eyes and arms that it can turn on and off like switches — a glow that confuses attackers and costs almost nothing metabolically, unlike hunting or fleeing.
• Its scientific name, Vampyroteuthis infernalis, means 'vampire squid from hell' — but it was named in 1881 by a scientist who'd only seen a preserved specimen and assumed it was bloodthirsty. In reality, it's a gentle scavenger living in an environment so extreme that looking menacing is cheaper than actually being dangerous. Few animals in the ocean are less of a threat than the creature we decided to name after horror.
