• A single firefly squid can shine with up to a thousand tiny blue-green photophores on its belly, plus five larger eye-ring lights and three giant arm-tip lanterns. The cone-shaped glow is directed downward, letting the squid spot prey silhouetted against the faint surface light and hide from predators below, a dual advantage that spectacular tourist displays.
• Firefly squids live just one year, but in that short span they travel from 300-400 m deep daylight waters at night, then back again each day, a daily plunge of up to 380 m.
