- Harbour porpoises can dive to 220 metres and stay down for up to five minutes, but most dives last only a minute. These deep, brief plunges let them chase bottom-dwelling fish in waters under 200 m deep, where they snap up tiny prey as small as 3 cm. The ability to reach such depths quickly shows how their compact bodies and powerful muscles are built for a fast, stealthy strike on schooling fish that hide near the seabed.
- Globally there are at least 700 000 harbour porpoises, with 467 000 counted in the Atlantic region from Gibraltar to Norway in 2016.
