Urutu

Fascinating facts about the Urutu

• A 1.69 m (5.5 ft) specimen of the urutu holds the record for verified length, dwarfing the average 0.8–1.2 m (2.6–3.9 ft) snakes that most people meet in the wild. Its sheer size gives it a powerful strike that can incapacitate large prey, showing why size matters more than you might think for a pit viper.
• When a female urutu gives birth, each newborn weighs just 17.4 g (0.61 oz) and measures about 31 cm (12.2 in) – yet it can deliver a venomous bite the instant it emerges. This instant danger demonstrates how the species invests in survival from the first breath.
• A 1949 survey of 6,601 snakebite cases recorded 384 bites from urutus, but only eight deaths (about 2%). The low fatality rate, despite the snake’s fearsome reputation, reminds us that medical care and antivenin can dramatically shift outcomes.
• In a hospital study of 32 urutu victims, 97% showed clotting times over 12 minutes, 41% bled from the gums, 32% developed blisters, and 9% suffered tissue necrosis. These statistics reveal that the venom’s main threat is blood-clot disruption, not outright lethality.
• Genomic work uncovered 59 toxin genes across 16 families in the urutu’s venom gland, with phospholipase A2 and metalloproteinases dominating. Knowing the exact cocktail helps scientists craft more precise antivenins, turning DNA data into lifesaving tools.
