• During breeding season, a male Oriental garden lizard transforms his head and body into a living traffic light — his throat inflates into a bright red or orange pouch while his back flushes deep crimson, a colour change so dramatic it happens in seconds. This isn't camouflage; it's a challenge advertisement visible 20 metres away, telling rival males to back off. The intensity of his colour directly signals his testosterone levels and fighting ability, and females choose mates based partly on how vividly red they can turn.
• The 'changeable' in their name comes from their ability to shift between brown, grey, and green depending on mood and temperature — but here's what's strange: they don't change colour to match their surroundings like a chameleon does. Instead, they use colour to communicate, regulate body heat, and signal stress. A stressed lizard darkens; a calm one lightens. On cool mornings they'll perch in direct sunlight, their skin darkening to absorb warmth faster than a lighter body would.
• A male Oriental garden lizard will bob his head in a precise pattern — one quick dip, pause, then rapid oscillations — to advertise his territory and dominance.
