About the Equatorial Spitting Cobra

The Equatorial spitting cobra (Naja sumatrana) is a medium-sized elapid that typically measures between 0.9 and 1.2 metres, though some individuals push out to 1.5 metres. Its body is dorsoventrally compressed and becomes sub-cylindrical toward the tail, while the head is elliptical, depressed and only faintly set off from the neck, sporting a short, rounded snout and large nostrils. Two distinct colour phases betray its geography: a vivid yellow form dominates Thailand and northern Peninsular Malaysia, whereas a deep black variant inhabits southern Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, and the Indonesian and Philippine islands. Juveniles often differ from adults, adding a layer of visual intrigue to a snake already known for its smooth, strongly oblique dorsal scales and lack of hood markings. In the humid lowlands and foothills up to about 1,500 metres, this cobra makes its home in primary and secondary tropical forests, yet it readily ventures into gardens, parks and even urban settings, bringing it into frequent contact with people. Primarily diurnal and terrestrial, it preys on rodents and frogs but will not refuse a passing lizard, small mammal, or even another snake. Its most startling trait is the ability to spit venom with precision from trees or the ground when threatened, a behaviour that can be especially fierce in the yellow Thai specimens, which have been observed spitting copious amounts without depleting their venom reserves.
