• A male tufted deer's fangs can grow up to 2.5 centimetres below his upper lip — longer than a grain of rice is wide. These aren't for show: they're weapons. Males fence with them during the breeding season, slashing at rivals' flanks in combat that can last minutes. No other deer in China carries tusks like this, making them look more like small tusked musk deer cousins than typical antlered cervids.
• The tuft on a tufted deer's head isn't decoration — it's a stress signal. When alarmed, the hairs on their crown stand on end, doubling their apparent size to predators. This works because tufted deer live in steep mountain forests where running away is harder than bluffing; a deer that looks larger and more alert might scare off a leopard before a chase even starts.
• Tufted deer are one of the few ungulates that deliberately eat mushrooms and fungi. In the misty mountain forests of central China where they live, fungi are more reliable than leaves across seasons — they'll follow fruiting patterns through the year, moving to different elevations to find them. This dietary flexibility has kept them thriving in habitats where other deer starve.
• For decades, tufted deer were thought to live only in a handful of isolated forests in Yunnan province. In 2019, a camera trap survey in Myanmar's Hengduan Mountains revealed an entirely separate population of thousands — turning a 'possibly extinct' animal into one with a real future. The discovery showed how little we still know about wildlife in remote Asian mountains.
• A tufted deer weighs just 7 to 15 kilograms — smaller than a beagle — but defends a territory year-round, both male and female. They mark trees with scent glands and hold firm against intruders even during harsh winters. This makes them among the most territorial of all small deer, trading size for stubbornness and a strategy that works in forests where space is more precious than food.
