• Alpine chipmunks spend 7–8 months of the year in hibernation, their body temperature dropping from 37°C to just 4°C — barely warmer than a refrigerator. But they don't sleep through winter like bears do. Every 10–14 days they wake up, shiver their muscles back to life, and eat from cached food stores they've buried across their mountain territory. It's a metabolic gamble: hibernation saves energy, but waking up burns it fast, so they must have buried hundreds of nuts to survive.
• A single alpine chipmunk can scatter-hoard 15,000 seeds and nuts across its 1–2 hectare territory in autumn — and remember the location of 90% of them come spring. They don't use smell or marking; they use spatial memory so precise it rivals a London taxi driver's brain. Without these buried seeds, alpine wildflowers would have far fewer pollinators, and the meadow ecosystem would collapse.
• At elevations above 2,500 metres, where alpine chipmunks live, oxygen levels are 40% lower than at sea level. Their blood contains extra haemoglobin — the iron protein that carries oxygen — allowing them to stay active in conditions that would leave lowland mammals gasping. In just a few generations of living high, their physiology has rewired itself to thrive where most mammals can barely breathe.
• Alpine chipmunks share their name with a supermarket chain, but the real distinction lies underground: they build burrows with up to five separate chambers for nesting, food storage, and waste — essentially a tiny apartment complex engineered to keep winter supplies separate from living space. These burrows can reach 3 metres deep, anchored into permafrost-adjacent soil where the temperature stays stable year-round.
• Female alpine chipmunks give birth to only 4–5 pups per year, fewer than almost any other ground squirrel species. In harsh mountain conditions where growing season lasts mere weeks and food is scarce, fewer offspring means each pup gets more parental investment and a better shot at survival. This strategy reveals an ecological truth: in extreme habitats, bigger families fail — smaller, cherished litters succeed.
