• Smaller than a house cat but built like a sprinter, Weyns's duiker weighs just 7 kg and stands 30 cm tall — yet it bounds through montane forest at speeds that leave larger predators behind. Their legs are positioned directly under their body, a design borrowed from horses and antelopes that trades stability for explosive acceleration. In dense undergrowth where a leopard cannot pivot, this tiny antelope becomes untouchable.
• Most duikers are solitary ghosts of the forest, but Weyns's duiker is a rare exception: they form stable pairs that stay together for life and defend shared territories. A mated pair will groom each other, forage within metres of one another, and produce just one calf per year — a reproductive strategy that suggests genuine partnership rather than coincidence. For an animal the size of a rabbit, this kind of loyalty is almost unheard of among African ungulates.

• Unlike most small African antelopes that eat seeds and fallen fruit, Weyns's duiker forages on leaves and high vegetation — reaching up with its front legs to stretch higher, a behaviour called 'pyramiding' that's usually seen in larger browsing species. This dietary switch means they can exploit food sources in dense forest that ground-feeding duikers cannot reach, allowing them to vanish entirely into the canopy zone.
• With fewer than 50 individuals ever recorded in scientific collections and no formal census in the wild, Weyns's duiker belongs to a vanishing tribe: African duiker species whose entire populations fit in a spreadsheet. The montane forests of the Congo Basin lose 0.4% of their cover annually. By the time we develop tools to study this species properly, we may have already lost it.
