Trinket Snake

Fascinating facts about the Trinket Snake

• Adults may attain a total length of 4.5 ft (1.4 m), which includes a tail 10 in (25 cm) long.
• The preferred natural habitat of C. helena is forest at altitudes from sea level to 2,500 m (8,200 ft), and it is also found around houses.
• Each adult carries between 220 and 265 ventral scales and 75 to 94 subcaudal scales, a precise count that taxonomists use to tell it apart from look-alike species; these scale patterns act like a natural barcode for scientists.
• When disturbed, males are more likely to strike repeatedly, and their inward-pointing teeth can cause surprisingly damaging bites despite being non-venomous; this aggressive defense shows that “harmless” snakes can still pack a punch.
