About the Boomslang

The boomslang (Dispholidus typus) is a sleek, arboreal colubrid that measures most adults between 100 and 160 cm, though some stretch beyond 183 cm. Its head is egg-shaped and set off from the neck, crowned by exceptionally large, round eyes that swivel side-to-side for a panoramic view. Colouration varies dramatically: males often flash a light green with black or blue-edged scales, while females tend toward brown, a striking example of sexual dimorphism. Its body is lightly compressed, covered in narrow, strongly keeled dorsal scales arranged in 19 or 21 rows, and a long, prehensile tail ending in paired subcaudals. The rear-fanged boomslang wields three massive, grooved fangs beneath each eye and can open its jaws to a remarkable 170°, a surprise trait that maximises venom delivery during a bite. In the tangled canopies of Sub-Saharan forests, savannahs, karoo shrubs and lowland woodlands, the boomslang moves with quiet confidence, rarely venturing to the ground except to hunt or seek shelter. Its diet is a mosaic of arboreal prey, chameleons, lizards, frogs, birds, eggs, and it will even swallow other snakes, including conspecifics, whole. Diurnal and reclusive, it slides from branch to branch when threatened, inflating its neck and assuming an S-shaped striking pose. During cooler periods it brumates, often curling inside a weaverbird’s closed nest, a behavior that underscores its adaptability to seasonal extremes while remaining ever-watchful from its lofty perch
