• A cornsnake's jaw can unhinge so far that it swallows prey wider than its own head — a rat whole, fur and bones, in under 60 seconds. The snake doesn't suffocate because a tube in its mouth lets it breathe while swallowing. This extreme flexibility comes from skull bones held together by stretchy ligaments instead of rigid joints, a design so effective it hasn't changed in 60 million years.
• Cornsnakes kill by constriction, but they're patient hunters: they'll strike a mouse, release it, then track it by scent as it dies, waiting 10 to 20 minutes before eating. This isn't laziness — it's strategy. A mouse can bite back, so the snake lets venom-free constriction do the work at no risk to itself.
• The red cornsnake's colour is almost entirely a human invention. The wild population ranges from orange to brownish-red, but since the 1950s breeders have created over 800 colour morphs — bloodreds, charcoals, anerythristics — by selecting snakes with rare genetic variations. No other snake has been bred into as many colours, making cornsnakes the most genetically diverse reptile in captivity.
• A cornsnake can see in colour and has excellent night vision thanks to rod-heavy eyes tuned for low light, but it hunts mostly by heat. Pits along its lower jaw read infrared radiation like a thermal camera, detecting a warm mouse in complete darkness from 15 centimetres away. This dual sensory system — eyes and heat pits working together — gives them a hunting advantage no mammal predator has.
• Cornsnakes live 15 to 20 years in the wild and up to 23 in captivity, but their longevity is paid for in slow reproduction. A female lays only 12 to 24 eggs once per year, and hatchlings take 3 to 4 years to reach breeding size. This slow life history makes wild populations vulnerable: a single bad breeding season can take years to recover, which is why habitat loss in the American Southeast is a real threat despite their 'Least Concern' status.
