• Townsend's moles have 10 times more sensory nerves in their snout than humans have in their entire hand — a hyper-sensitive touch pad no bigger than a grain of rice that lets them hunt blind, reading the soil like braille at 30 metres below the surface. They never need to see their prey; they feel it.
• A single Townsend's mole digs roughly 300 metres of tunnel per day, reshaping the forest floor into a living map of predation. Over a year, one animal moves more soil than a wheelbarrow could carry in a month — all to trap earthworms and grubs in self-made highways they patrol for food.
• Their forelimbs are rotated 90 degrees outward, like a swimmer's arms mid-stroke, giving them a gait so sideways they look almost broken when they walk on the surface. • The Pacific Northwest's moist soils are a biological accident — glaciers retreated only 12,000 years ago, leaving behind clay and silt so dense and wet that earthworms thrive, and only a mole built like Townsend's could hunt them profitably. They are bound to this narrow strip of continent by geology, and nowhere else on Earth has the conditions that made them.
