• A tokay gecko's grip is so powerful it can hang from a ceiling by a single toe pad — each foot has 2 million microscopic hair-like structures called setae that use van der Waals forces (the same weak attraction that holds gecko feet to walls) to create contact without glue or suction. Astronauts studied their feet to design better robot climbers. A gecko that weighs 300 grams can support 40 kilograms dangling from one digit.
• The name 'tokay' comes from their call — a loud, metallic 'to-kay, to-kay, to-kay' that echoes through Southeast Asian forests at night, repeated up to 10 times in succession. Males bark to claim territory and warn rivals they're willing to fight. The sound can reach 100 decibels, as loud as a chainsaw, from an animal the size of a pencil.

• Tokay gecko blood has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for over 2,000 years, driving wild populations to decline by an estimated 50% in some regions over the past 20 years. A single wild-caught gecko can sell for $20 USD — high enough that poachers now target them across Southeast Asia and India. Conservation depends almost entirely on captive breeding to reduce wild harvest pressure.
