• A Texas pocket gopher spends 99% of its life underground in a tunnel system that can stretch 150 metres — longer than a football field — all dug by a single animal's claws. The gopher never comes to the surface to defecate, urinate, or sleep; it lives, breeds, and dies in complete darkness, navigating by touch alone. This obsessive burrowing habit is so extreme that a gopher will suffocate if placed in an open field, unable to cope with the absence of walls.
• The gopher's teeth never stop growing throughout its entire life, yet its molars never wear down — a trick no other mammal has cracked. The outer layer of enamel is harder and thicker than the inner dentine, so as the soft centre wears away, the outer edge self-sharpens like a chisel. This design evolved to handle a diet of sand-coated roots and abrasive soil, and it allows the animal to dig for 30 years without dental failure.
• Males and females never share a burrow except to mate once a year, and the male is forcibly evicted immediately after. For 11 months, each gopher lives in solitary confinement by choice, with no tolerance for others of its kind. A gopher will fight to the death over a tunnel entrance. This extreme territoriality means that a single square kilometre might contain fewer than 10 individuals, despite the abundance of food.
• The Texas pocket gopher gets its name from fur-lined pouches that run from its mouth to its hips, opening outward like cargo pockets on the outside of the cheeks. These pouches can hold up to 500 seeds or root fragments at once and are lined with fur for insulation and comfort. The gopher stuffs them above ground, returns underground, and empties them into storage chambers — a strategy that lets it gather food in dangerous daylight hours and eat safely below.
• A gopher's eyes are the size of a grain of rice and covered by skin almost all the time; it barely sees at all. Instead, it hunts roots by touch using sensory hairs on its face and a nose that detects chemical traces of plant matter through soil particles.
