• A butterfly the size of a postage stamp has cracked a survival problem that kills most desert insects: it doesn't need to drink. The Texan crescent absorbs all the water it needs through its feet while feeding on flower nectar, then stores it in its body like a living water tank. • Most butterflies are born as solitary wanderers, but Texan crescent caterpillars live in groups that can number in the hundreds on a single plant leaf — clustering so densely that predators see one large, moving target instead of many small ones. When threatened, the entire colony rocks side to side in unison, a synchronized defense that confuses attackers enough to escape.
